ADAB & BUDI

Leading the Way with Adab and Budi (LAB) carries the theme of Humanising Education which becomes the integral part of IIUM Strategic Direction.  LAB Framework is initiated and designed to embrace the IIUM philosophy of Garden of Knowledge and Virtue.

IIUM LAB aims to transform IIUM communities to uphold the true reflection of Adab and Budi to become a balanced staff with designated programmes within IIUM.

Narrated by ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr:

The Prophet (ﷺ) never used bad language neither a “Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He used to say “The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character.”

From the above Hadith, we learn that it is vital for us to take the matter of manners seriously because to be the best amongst us is to have the best manners and character. This is to reflect the true muslim character in our life in seeking the pleasure from Allah SWT and to potray a good example to the non-muslims. As a muslim, we should not be aiming to achieve a minimum but rather always striving to improve ourselves and become the best Muslim character with the best manners. We should learn that there is a habit and quality in our life as the servant of Allah SWT and it should be our goal in life.

Having good Adab is essential in all aspects of life if we want others to respect us.

We know that professional manners get positive attention. Skills on the job are important, but knowing how to do the work isn’t the only thing expected of us. Following the etiquette rules at work will help us earn respect and possibly even contribute to promotions and raises.

In leading the way with Adab and Budi, we also need to understand the concept of ‘Budi Bahasa’ , ‘Budi Pekerti’ and ‘Budi Bicara’.  These three elements are important in our daily life. It should be incorporated in Adab and Budi.

It is expected that this holistic programme would produce the following outcomes:

  1. This programme would provide a systematic platform for all staff to polish and enhance their human relation skills.

  2. The programme will train the staff to always be courteous, humble and kind in line with the IIUM agenda in leading with Adab and Budi.

  3. Comprehend the nature and quality of the Qalb as the main important component of human beings.

  4. Strengthen the role of spirituality and the inner aspect of religion in nurturing sustainable leaders.

  5. This programme would finally be considered as a best practice and it will boost the image of IIUM.

Thus the LAB Framework shall work within the existing three (3) layers of understanding and activities to realise the impact of LAB comprising the guiding principles, the IIUM existing integrated framework and current initiatives of programmes.

Guiding Principles shall appreciate the meaning of Maqasid Al-Shariah, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 4 Pillars of Educations for 21st Century, Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan and of course support the blueprint of National Education Plan. All of these principles are essentials to design any initiatives or programmes for the staff.

IIUM Integrated Framework is to drive the University Roadmap that further elaborate under its strategic initiatives of Sejahtera Engagement to produce balance and harmony community with the overall target of Comprehensive Excellence Staff. This should be envisioned through the Triple ICE that becomes the mission of this University that are Integration, Islamization, Internationalization and Comprehensive Excellence.

Initiatives in the Garden of Knowledge and Virtue

Being good is not just about being courteous to people – it is a vital element of human relations that represents IIUM’s quality service. Understanding the importance of excellent human relations experience is very important in our life.

The University since 2009 has embarked on a few programmes to come out with a structured module on programmes related to excellent human relations and excellent customer service.

Among the initiatives to strengthen and enhance the adab and budi among IIUM community are:

  •  Budi module to be introduced to staff

  • Sharing of Wisdom words

  • ADAB and BUDI Campaigns at University level

  • Budi module to be incorporated in the curriculum

  • ‘SULAM’ Programme – Service Learning Malaysia: University for Society

  • Role model/ role by example

  • Promoting the Murrabi concept

  • Wisdom lane to be established

  • H.E.A.R.T Campaigns & H.E.A.R.T Training Programmes (service excellent) for staff

One of the programs namely Service Excellence Programme was introduced in 2009. The main objective of this programme is to train staff to become more efficient, effective and professional when servicing their customers. In this programme, the administrative and technical staff were trained on how to handle customers by using the Standard People Practice (SPP). The programme was led by MSD as the Secretariat with the assistance from other offices. To have a refresh look, the programme was rebranded to Serve it Right in 2011. The University has trained some staff to become in-house trainers.

Through the implementation of these initiatives we expect to see significant culture change among the IIUM community where the adab and budi is embedded in their daily activities and become the culture of everybody. This shall remind us of what our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also said:

“‏ أَكْمَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِيمَانًا أَحْسَنُهُمْ خُلُقًا ‏”‏ ‏

“The believers most perfect in faith are those best in Character” (Narrated by Abu Hurairah).

From the above hadith, again we can see that Islam teaches us the importance of having a good manner and character which it is directly influence our level of faith.  May this project bring significant change in the culture among the IIUM community and spread the positive vibes to the outside community. Let IIUM be known as the best University leading the way with Adab and Budi.
